The leash and harness

Is this necessary for bonding? I have read a few websites that have adviced people to purchase or get hold of a leash and collar or harness for easy bonding with their gliders. To me, I don’t think it is very safe, especially with hamster leash and harnesses since it is thin, and is only suitable for hamsters.

This just got my blood boiling when I saw a staff at a pet counter, selling a hamster harness and leash to a lady, saying that it keeps the glider safe and can bring it for walks. Is that proper? I have seen a few designs that people have come up with overseas, and the harneses are thick and uses velcro to strap on, making it safe I guess…. but thin rope-like harnesses I think would just hurt the glider, especially if it tries to jump by spreading out its gliding membrane.

How about your thoughts? On my side, I believe the bonding pouch works well enough and once a glider learns to trust us and is already bonded, it will very likely not jump off you without a reason.

Canned insects

Recently canned insects are ow available in Malaysia. Great news rite? Well, I have only used dehydrated mealworms so far, would like to try the canned silk worms and canned crickets later on.

Anyway, where to get it? Well, it can be delivered right to your door step now. Chubby Pets Garden has recently started selling these crunchy dried delicacy.

Dried Canned Insects

I guess these would come in handy when we go travelling with our gliders or to those that feel squirmish around live insects.

What plant is safe for a Suggie? ~Part 1~

I too ponder with this question. Which plant is suitable? Trees like apple is not available here and our tropical trees are toxic to gliders. We must take into account that gliders are tree sap eaters, so it will be natural for the glider to chew the bark.

I do have a website that gives a guide on what is safe and what is not, but I have never had the time to Google the plants to get pictures. So today, my post would be on plants and trees that are safe for gliders that we can find in Malaysia.

JUST A NOTE:

Beware of pesticides, some plants may have been heavily sprayed with pesticides, fungicide and poisonous fertilizers.

Great website MoonDance Sugar Gliders

This is the Albizzia tree. I have seen it in Malaysia. It is categorized as non-toxic.

This is also another plant that I have seen quite often locally. Beware of pesticides. This I saw sold at most plant nurseries and even shopping malls. It is called Pilea cadierei or Aluminum Plant.

This is Asparagus Fern. An ornamental fern. A very fine looking type of fern that is safe when eaten. Can be found at most nurseries.

Common Bamboo is also safe for gliders. Use it to decorate the cage for gliders to climb about.

This is a very common local fern. Can be found on tree tops. Called Bird’s Nest Fern.

Canna Lily, I even have this at home but didn’t know it is safe for suggies till today. Well, I don’t think this plant would make a good perch for a glider to be on, but then it is safe.

Well, this is only PART 1. I will update with PART 2 later because it takes time for me to look for the pictures and discription and also locating info on the toxic level of the plant.

Is my kid ready to have a glider?

This would be a question a parent would ask oneself….. when is the right timing? What pet? Is my child responsible enough?

In my point of view, children as young as 4 can start handling gliders but with supervision. I do like to visit pet fairs and bring along my gliders. It’s great to get the attention from curious visitors, and it is good when I see children coming up to me with questions. I let children have a go at handling my gliders if they behave well and will not squish or squeeze the life out of them.

Letting a child have a pet is a great responsibility. I was given my first pet rabbit when I was 3 years old…. but then I was too young that all I did was play with them while my parents did the cleaning and caring. I took full responsibility of a shih tzu when I was 9 years old, my first pet dog where I have to clean, care and train. It was hard for me at first but later on it help with my confidense, my organization and also it taught me responsibility.

Is it a good idea for a kid to have a pet? Yes! It would be, provided that your child is mature enough to do the dirty work such as cleaning and such, and understands the care and conditions for the pet. One thing I notice when children have pets is that they would spend less time loitering or lazing away. It gives them something to do during their free time.

Now here are a few things one must know when giving a pet to a child:

- Best ages would be a child above the age of 10 years old. This is where a child would have full responsibility of a pet so he must be mature enough to understand about pet care. If you are thinking of getting a glider for a younger child, then remember, it is your responsibility to educate your child and to care for the glider.

- Allergies….. be aware that gliders have fur, so if your child is sensitive to fur, better avoid keeping pets. Gliders have claws so children should wear long sleeve clothing to protect their delicate skin when handling a glider.

- Claws, gliders have sharp claws so scratches that are itchy and red will always come about if a glider did not get it’s claws or nails trimmed nicely. Adults should supervise their kids.

- A child should show interest. He or she must not want a glider on impulse. Test your kid’s knowledge on sugar gliders. If there is interest, your child would not stop talking about what are sugar gliders and how to care for them.

Teenagers are generally easier when it comes to pets. They know what they like and dislike and they are at an age where they are able to care for their own pets responsibly. Of course, only let you kid have pets if they are really into it and will take good care of them.

It will be a big step so when you think you want to get a pet for your kid, discuss with them about it. Never let it be a surprise. Also remember, get the whole family involved too.

Edit:

Silas,

Thank you for your comment. Yes, we have to be careful, all animals actually carry bacteria that is not healthy for young children. The best way to handle this is by praticing good hygiene. Children, particularly the youngsters can easily get salmonella from pets. So make sure children wash their hands after handling or touching a glider.

April already….

I gotta appologize to all my readers. Terribly sorry for not updating my blog for the past month. First, I was busy with assignments, exams, blah blah blah…. the usual stuff a college student would get when it is near the end of the term.

Anyway, will be back on track. Bookmark us and keep a look out on interesting articles such as non-poisonous plants and trees that are safe for gliders, a raw diet for gliders and DIY stuff for gliders.
